The story of the ocean: a young ceramicists perspective

For Hannah, year 12 student and a regular visitor to Bruny Island, a childhood spent in and around the ocean has left a big impression. Growing up with a family who live by the sea; swimming, fishing, snorkelling, beachcombing, surfing and playing at the beach, has given Hannah a deep and lasting connection to the ocean. This connection has strongly informed her sculptural ceramic pieces featured at a recent exhibition.
The story of the ocean by Hannah Jacobson

How do I tell the story of the ocean?

‘Ocean’, Mother, Nourisher, Giver of Life.

The ‘Ocean’ gifts an infinite bounty of fragility, beauty and uniqueness, while it guards objects that embody the passage of time.

Each mark in the surface tells this story of time, persistence and permanence. ‘Ocean’ fills me with a sense of peacefulness, stillness and tranquillity. Being in the ‘Ocean’ impacts all five senses at once.

Listen to the waves crashing.

Smell the fresh salty air.

Taste the salt water in your mouth.

Feel the sand in your hands.

Embrace the beauty of the form.

Embody the feelings of awe, wonder and harmony.

Like the tide, let these moments wash over you.
