Australasian Gannet

These dive bombing birds are a common sight on the south coast of Australia and parts of New Zealand. They are spectacular plunge-divers, diving from up to 30m high, reaching speeds of over 100 km/h to penetrate the water.

Species Description

These white birds have a very distinct orange head hand black tips to their wings. 

Species Size

They weigh 2-3 kg with a wingspan of up to 200cm.

They are known for plunging into the water at up to 100 km per hour.

Coastal seas.

They mainly feast on mackerel on herring.

Species Where to See

On mainland Australia there's a breeding colony at Point Danger, near Portland Victoria. On Bruny Island, Adventure Bay is a good spot.
