Bruny Island
Bruny Youth Story Prize entry - The Albatross, Tommy Roser age 7

I was in a storm. I was so scared when I got hit. I wasn’t flying but I was falling from the sky. When I hit the ground, I found a place to rest in the nest. The next day I woke up. My wing was better, so I kept flying. I was flying across the seas. I was flying across the big city when I saw a plane, and I followed the plane and it went to a big place.

I heard a human say it is an airport and I said I really wanted to be a human.

I needed to escape. I saw a door. I ran out and suddenly I turned back into a bird.

I went back to my bird home. One day later I went back to my home, and I never wanted to go back to the city again.

So, I went to sleep. The next day I went to catch food.

For your information, albatross live together and they eat fish. Albatross Island is full of Albatross birds. They are large birds and have big wing spans. Another interesting fact – they don’t always need to flap their wings.

OK back to the story.

Two years later I saw another bird. It was going for me, so I was flying the other way. But it was too fast, so we were fighting. It was fast, but I was strong. It fell on the road.

I saw a lot of meat on the road, so I found a way to get it. There were no cars, so I quickly grabbed it and I took it to my nest. After I had dinner, I went to sleep.

The next day I went for a fly and I saw a town. There were people and it wasn’t as big as the city. I saw small houses and other big houses. But I didn’t want to go there because I didn’t feel safe. Ten seconds later I thought I actually will go there. When I got there, I was put in a cage. I got taken away. I was in a house alone. Then I got carried into another room. In the morning it was light. After that they let me free and then I went back to my nest, and I had a rest for a day.

The end.
