Ancient beauty in Victoria's central highlands

The Victorian Central Highlands are home to the largest forest of ash left on mainland Australia. The Mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) is the tallest flowering plant in the world, with individual trees reaching over 100 metres in height.

The ancient forests of the Victorian Central Highlands carry deep social, cultural and environmental importance. These ash forests store more carbon per hectare than any other forest studied in the world, and they are home to many threatened species, including the critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum.

Sadly, heavy logging and numerous wildfires continue to threat the forests.

This short film beautifully illustrates the irreplaceable importance of these ecosystems and why they need to be protected.

Narrated by Joy Murphy Wandin AO, Senior Wurundjeri elder of the Kulin nation.

Written and Directed by environmental advocate and documentary filmmaker, Marli Lopez-Hope.

"Standing 100 metres above the forest floor, I hold your carbondioxide in my trunk. I hold your secrets in my leaves. I hold the history of this land in my roots."
The Great Forest National Park Campaign is proposing an additional 355,000 hectares of protected forests to the existing 170,000 hectares of parks and protected areas in the Central Highlands of Victoria, creating one big Great Forest National Park.
