About Wyargine Aquatic Reserve Friend Inc

Wyargine Aquatic Friends Inc. (WAF) is a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to the establishment of the Wyargine Aquatic Reserve within Sydney Harbour. The proposed Wyargine Aquatic Reserve in the area around Rocky Point Island, Edwards Bay and Chinaman’s Beach and the adjacent waterways in between.

Background

We are seeking to establish an Aquatic Reserve in the area around Rocky Point Island, Edwards Bay and Chinaman’s Beach and the adjacent waterways in between (see the map below). The NSW Department of Primary Industries outlines the purposes of an Aquatic Reserve as being, “The primary purpose of aquatic reserves in NSW is to conserve biodiversity, or particular components of biodiversity (such as specific
ecosystems, communities or species), in a specified area of the marine estate.” The primary purpose of a reserve is to conserve biological diversity in a specified area. The benefits to the marine precinct and the community are evidenced by the success of the Cabbage Tree Bay aquatic reserve. The Wyargine Aquatic Reserve (the Reserve) would offer enormous resources for education, vastly improve the aquatic diversity and allow for rejuvenation of many aquatic species.
