For the last five months, a friend of mine and I have been taking our lunch in the lawn of our office at exactly one o’clock. At this time, two crows visit us regularly, showing a keen interest in sharing our food, which we happily offer them. First, they settle on a nearby tree, then slowly come down, branch by branch, and finally pick the food we leave for them.
Sometimes, when a cat—also a regular visitor at lunchtime—comes near, the crows express their displeasure by making harsh, high-pitched sounds. It feels as if they are commanding us to chase the cat away so that they can safely come down and eat. And, in fact, obeying their signal, we drive the cat away. Only when the crows carefully scan the area and feel it is safe, do they finally come to the ground.
This shows how cleverly they handle daily life, ensuring both their share of food and their safety. Truly amazing.
But the story does not end here. After lunch, we usually go for a walk in the nearby park. Interestingly, the same two crows follow us there. While we walk, they keep us company by flying from tree to tree along our path.
This behavior shows that, among birds, the crow has a high level of intelligence and a real capacity to think.
