The Dial Range: an artist's perspective

Louise Daniels is a Tasmanian visual artist of Trawlwoolway/Palawa heritage. Her art practice incorporates drawing, painting, and wire sculpture, with her work often referencing Country and cultural histories. Her landscape paintings celebrate the colours, land-forms and watercourses of beautiful North Western Tasmania where she grew up and currently lives. From the massive glass windows in her art studio up on a hill in Ulverston, Louise has a magnificent view over the silhouette and sunset of the Dial Range.
"What’s special about the Dial Range for me, I suppose it’s just always being there."

That silhouette is sort of imprinted on my brain. I love it. It's hard to imagine the town without that backdrop. It’s a beautiful natural place, with clean air, and there's a lot of outdoor activities and places to go and just enjoy the natural beauty.

The Dial Range is very frequent in my landscapes. I’ve probably done at least 10 landscapes that have the Dial Range in them. This one that I’m working on right now, that’s the view of the Dial Range from Bradden’s Lookout Hill, just a bit further down from the lookout.

I did an earlier version of that view more than 10 years ago, and I just wanted to have another go and make it more textural, give it a different feel. The painting is during golden hour in the late afternoon.

And from this studio, at the end of my working day I’ll often sit down and enjoy the sunset behind the Dial Range. It’s just so beautiful, it’s a lovely thing to be able to do.

When I see these views and beautiful natural landscapes, I always think about how I could incorporate it in my art. Especially with the sunsets, but of course it changes so quickly. I’ve decided with the sunsets, actually the best thing to do is just to sit back and enjoy the show. Because it’s always different. But I do take photographs sometimes to capture a particular light.

The light on the range and the town can be really, really fabulous and captivating.
