Our job to preserve the dream of Sydney harbour is never done

Mosman
The job of the Headland Preservation Group is never done, we hold the same values as the Sydney Harbour trust to preserve, conserve and interpret the headlands of Sydney harbour.

These headlands are such a special place for Australians because of three very important values. That is the military historical values, the Indigenous heritage values and the environment.

There are always those out there with vested interests, whether they're private or public, that would like a slice of this land. And it's invaluable real estate, the price is high, magnificent views. It's our job to ensure that these lands are protected, conserved and interpreted, and that their values are understood. It's extraordinary that most of these lands have a Commonwealth, state or national heritage listing, and yet there are still people that want to build new buildings in Commonwealth heritage protected precincts. If we do not stand up and protect them we will lose them. We have one opportunity to retain the values here and we must not squander that opportunity.

My dream is that these lands be opened up to all Australians, that they understand and are educated as to their values, but also that they enjoy the lands and that they involve themselves in them and immerse themselves in the wondrous beauty of the lands.

But not only Australians, our international tourists, and one of the biggest assets is this 80 kilometre Bondi to Manley walk, which is a walkway, which skirts the middle head and many of the Harbour foreshores. The Bondi to Manly walk is going to have an enormous impact on middle head and other foreshore lands by opening it up to people not only Australians but international tourists.

The Headland Preservation Group over the last more than 28 years has and will continue to fight for the protection of the very important values of these sites, the indigenous, the military, environmental and cultural values.

HPT will continue to stand up against inappropriate development and uses of these sites.
