The only places we had to go were our local areas, and for us in Mosman to be able to come to even small little pocket parks or large parks, some with just some green space for solace, contemplation, and your general health.
I think people found that there is a connection between being able to get out into an open space and your health.
As we densify, and people are living in multi-story type accommodation where there is no small garden of their own, to walk into the public space has never been more important. In Sydney, this is happening everywhere. And so many kids live in very dense accommodation. It's really important for them to get out of the concrete jungle and into something else. We need to offer them good quality ‘something else’ too, so they really appreciate it.
I can remember there's a little park down at Mosman Bay - it's a tiny little park, and the Mosman Rowers Club wanted to extend onto it. In the beginning, I think people thought ‘oh, it's just a little bit’. But we went to the council meeting and spoke to the council and said ‘the fact that it's such a little park, so close to so many places, is why it must be kept’.
The smallness of it was actually really significant, because it was just this tiny little offering in an area that had nothing else.
