Bruny Island (Nuenonne: lunawanna-alonnah) is a globally significant ecological ark. A haven for birdlife. A critical refuge for a myriad of rare and threatened species. Home to highly varied and exquisite Natural landscapes. An extraordinary rich microcosm of the Nature of Tasmania, with threatened lowland and grassland communities, grand forests, coastal shrubs, vibrant marine habitats and long wild stretches of coastline providing home to very high biodiversity values.
The Bruny biosphere represents all of the aspects of the region of Bruny Island where life exists, from its terrestrial landscapes, to its coastline, and surrounding marine waters. The Bruny biosphere project seeks to meet the conservation needs of Bruny Island, not in an ad hoc and reactive way but in a forward thinking and proactive way, looking across the entire landscape. The dream is to build an inspiring vision for the future of Bruny Island’s species, ecosystems and landscapes, and a future where people and Nature in the Bruny bioregion can thrive together. The project, starting with founding partners, seeks to progressively build a broad cross section of people and groups on the island and beyond who share this vision and work together on a practical plan to achieve it.

This is a big idea and won’t be easy. But we are not the first people to embark on this journey. There are many inspiring examples of where a small group of committed and passionate people have similarly dreamed big for Nature, looked at how to achieve a landscape scale vision for Nature and achieved extraordinary things . Donations are vital to allow us to build sustainable funding that seeds, funds and delivers this long-term vision. Join our crowdfunding campaign to raise $5000 to start this project.
