A long walk along Cloudy Bay beach before ascending over a heathy headland out to East Cloudy Head.
Highlights
Spectacular ocean beach, superb views from East Cloudy Head
Track details
From the carpark, walk down to Cloudy Bay beach, a wide, open beach that is renowned for rolling surf and that faces the Southern Ocean where beyond the South-West Cape of Tasmania, no further significant landmark exists between here and Antarctica. Walk the 3-4km along the beach – enjoying the sight of Sooty and Pied Oystercatchers and Hooded plovers along with other birdlife, before you reach the campground and track at Cloudy Corner at the end of the beach. From here, the track follows a creek inland and then up over the heath covered headland, before tracking out to East Cloudy Head, a rocky headland with views to the roiling surf down below, and out into the Southern Ocean. A junction gives the option of turning right out to expansive views towards the Bruny Lighthouse and South-East Cape or following the main track up to the trig point. On a clear day you can see the rock formation Pedra Blanca which is 35km south from here in the Southern Ocean. There is a nice side-track not far from the campground into Beaufort Bay. Parts of this track are quite overgrown and scrubby, so long trousers may save some scratches. Beware of snakes, particularly in summer.
Note that old maps sometimes show a track continuing to Pine Log Bight. This track is no longer maintained by the Parks and Wildlife service and is now completely overgrown.
Location
7150, South Bruny, Tasmania, Australia
From Lunawanna, drive 9.7km south on Cloudy Bay Road (C644) until you reach the Cloudy Bay carpark and turning circle.
