The carolling of the currawong in the twilight of the high country soothes a weary mind, like little else can - Anonymous Angler

Lake Malbena lays at the heart of the Western Lakes wilderness in Lutruwita / Tasmania.

The lake was carved out of the Central Plateau in the last glaciation event, over 10,000 years ago - and has remained unchanged since.

The waters of Lake Malbena are pristine, a headwater lake high in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. It's sweet, clear waters are collected from surrounding mountain streams and neighbouring lakes.

Halls Island is a 10 hectare floral arc of the supercontinent, Gondwana. Halls Island sits peaceably in the lake and holds many rare, ancient and unique plant species, a rufugia from wildfire and other threats. But it's also where a property developer is attempting to build luxury cabins accessed by hundreds of helicopter flights per year.

This commercial proposal would forever ruin a place held dear by generations of Tasmanian bushwalkers and high country anglers. A place for wild creatures and immense peace and beauty.

Fishers and Walkers Tasmania have been fighting to keep Lake Malbena tranquil for many years. A proposal for a helicopter tourism operation to an island in the lake threatens a tranquility that has lasted eons.

FAWTas has thousands of supporters across Tasmania, we need them to become financial members so we can keep up the fight.

Tasmania offers some of the world’s most wonderfully wild, raw and remote multi-day walking. Tasmania’s multi-day walks range from well frequented, well maintained and well-marked walking tracks for ‘entry level’ walkers, through to remote hiking on rarely frequented or unmarked trails.
