"I have a dream" - speech by Martin Luther King
During the march on Washington for jobs and freedom on the 28th of August, 1963, American Civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King Jr delivered a speech that electrified the nation, and became known as his "I have a dream" speech.
In the speech, King expresses his dream for a more positive future for all who live in America, and expresses his desire for civil and economic rights and an end to racism. The speech was delivered to over 250,000 people in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
The March on Washington and the speech was a critical part of the ultimately successful campaign to put pressure on the Kennedy administration to advance civil rights legislation in congress.
