Embraced by the mountain

Sphinx Rock is this wonderful sandstone outcrop halfway up the mountain below the organ pipes.

You can see the organ pipes behind you and then the whole of the Derwent Estuary and everything else out here. It really is an amazing place. When you stand there the two big ridges sort of come around down and in front of you like arms embracing you.

One day I went out to Sphinx Rock, and there was this woman sitting on the rock just gazing out, all alone, and I thought “oh she's having a moment, I won't disturb her”. So I let her be, and I did whatever I was there to do, and after a little while she stirred and stood up.

We got chatting, and she said,

“I'd lived here until I was about 30 years old, and I've lived overseas ever since. But I come back every five years, and as soon as I get off that plane I come to this spot.”

I thought “Wow, that's powerful.”

She said,

“This is when I feel connected; I know I'm home when I come to this place.”

That stirred something in me. Over the years I've seen other signs of people's strong connection to that place. Somebody went and installed a little memorial plaque for a relative who had died. People form these connections with particular places, and they establish a connection with that country because of particular places or experiences, and it can be unique to each person.

And I've met so many different people now, who are so passionate about the place in different ways. They all share this value of the place.
