Coast to Cradle Wild Country Map
From Penguin, rising behind the town is the extraordinary landscape of the Dial Range.
This wild and intact natural landscape undulates south and then on to Gunns Plains and the globally significant Leven Canyon.
Adjacent to the Leven Canyon are the outstanding forested landscapes of three brothers and Loyetea Peak.
This wild country continues on to the outstanding striking mountain, Black Bluff, which is surrounded by rich, magnificent forested slopes.
Continuing further south, one passes the extraordinary Vale of Belvoir and on to the World Heritage landscape of Cradle Mountain.
This stretch of wild country from the mountains down to the sea is connected by one of Tasmania's most intact and outstanding river systems, the Leven River, and the world class Penguin to Cradle Trail.
The core of this wild country is managed by the Parks and Wildlife service, for conservation, but under six different land tenure types - from Nature Recreation area through to the Tasmanian forests agreement reserves or 'Future Potential Production forests' which have bipartisan support that they will not be opened to logging but have been in limbo in terms of their care, for over a decade.
